When Feyga Lebesher, the protagonist of season one is suddenly widowed she discovers her husband’s enormous debts and the duplicity of her brother-in-law. Facing ruin she appeals to Adam Czartoryski, an idealistic prince exiled by his family. The prince is smitten by Anna, Feyga’s unruly savant daughter, when she amazes him with her pattern recognition capabilities. This fateful encounter sparks an intimately complex relationship spanning twenty-five years.

While Prince Czartoryski engages in political defiance and armed rebellion, Feyga and Anna build out his commercial ventures; enterprises sought after by the Russian Empress. Immersed in intrigue, shifting alliances, ambiguous impulses, and betrayal, Feyga is constantly challenged by the complicated demands of the prince, his forceful wife Izabela; the controlling rabbinic authorities, and the never-ending political machinations of the Russian ministers and Tsars.
